I hope he got happier about his birthday as the day went on! Were you in trouble when he called you?

Hehehehe.... no. He was cool about it, and thought it was pretty neat, actually.

As the day progressed - yes, he felt better.

I look at it this way (and I can say this, because I'm starting to have a mid-life crisis about turning 50 -- and I'm not even there yet): it's only a NUMBER. It doesn't change who you are, or what you feel. You're not suddenly OLD because one day you're one age, and the next day you're another.

Like the saying goes - you're as old as you feel! (and I'm feeling pretty healthy & chipper!).

Yeah, I hit the Big 5-0 a couple years ago. I was feeling that mid-life crisis too. It was the first decade birthday where I felt like, "Ok, this isn't funny anymore." I never even got used to being 40, and there I was turning 50! Some friends said the same thing to me that you said: it's just a number. Then, after the birthday - life goes on as usual, and I'm STILL not used to being 40 yet...Petra and the treadmill keep me feeling young. : ) As for John, I think he will always be young.
